Before Microsoft acquired Nokia’s smartphones division, the company
was working on its very own smartwatch. According to the The Verge’s sources,
Nokia was working on a “Moonraker” smartwatch with Windows Phone design. The
working prototype was also reportedly shown to some of the customers at Mobile
World Congress 2014 and Nokia was planning to unveil it with the launch of the
Lumia 930 Windows Phone. But when Microsoft acquired the company, it canceled
the project in the favor of its band.
Thanks to Evan Blass, who recently discovered the images of the
Microsoft Moonraker smartwatch on a Tumblr blog of Microsoft employee Pei-Chi
Hsieh.
As you can see in the images, Nokia’s smartwatch was well designed and
attractive. The company used “Metro” interface for its OS elements and on the
design front it is somehow similar to the current Android Wear smartwatches. We
don’t think Moonraker will be ever coming to the market. As Microsoft is
currently focusing on promoting its Band. The company is expected to unveil the
Microsoft Band 2 later this year.
