One feature which most of the Android users are still waiting for is
the support for multi-window. We were expecting that Google might talk
about it during the announcement of Android M at
Google I/O 2015. But we haven’t heard anything. So, we started thinking
that Google might bring it in the final version of Android M and now it
seems like this might be true. A hidden Multi-window support has been
spotted in the recently released Developer Preview of Android M.
It is deeply hidden, so you will not find it easily. When enabled it
will allow you to use multi-window on your device’s screen. But to see
that you will have to do a little modification. As it is in its early
stage, so Google didn’t reveal it officially. But if you install a
custom recovery and edit the build.prop file, then you can test this
feature right now. You can find the full instructions on how to do that here.
After editing the build.prop file you will see a Multi-window toggle option in the Developer Options. And when enabled it will show you a new icon in the recent menu, allowing you to easily run two different apps at once.
As you can see Google’s warning dialog box refers it as a “highly
experimental” feature. Which is obvious as that is the only reason it
was deeply hidden. So, if you are enabling it then be ready to see lots
of crash and unexpected things on your Android device. But overall it is
a good idea to see how multi-window will work in Android M.
Hope Google will unveil it in the second or third developer preview of Android M. (Ya! that will be coming next month.)
